Is there other support and help that I can receive while I am pregnant and after I have my baby?

The programs listed below can help you to get health care coverage (insurance) for you and your baby, help you get prenatal care and post-partum care, and get pediatric care for your baby, and help you get other services that you need when you are pregnant, post-partum and parenting a baby. These programs can coordinate care for you, to be sure that you are receiving the services that you need. They also give you helpful information about how to take care of yourself and your baby.

I have concerns about my child’s development and behavior, where can I call?

 

Statewide

  • Help Me Grow is a place where you can call if you have concerns about your baby/child’s development or behavior. You should speak to your child’s doctor about this, but Help Me Grow can answer some of your questions and link you to some services and resources right away.
  • Child Development Info-line (CDI) at 1-800-505-7000
  • The CT State Department of Developmental Services (DDS) supports special services for children and youth who are in need of special developmental and health-related assistance.
  • Birth23 by Town (DSS division) is a program design to assist families to meet developmental and health-related needs of infants and toddlers.

To apply for cash assistance/temporary assistance for needy families you can visit your local DSS office. You can visit Connecticut State Department of Social Services for more information about your local DSS office.

What do I have to do to stay on track until graduation?

SPPT: If you are based in Hartford High School, the SPPT Program would be your first and best resource in helping you to navigate school choices, issues and concerns. See the Support for Pregnant and Parenting Teens Program section of this web page for how to access the program. You can also contact your guidance counselor or school social worker to learn about special accommodations to stay on track to graduation.

 

What do I do to apply for college? How do I apply for financial aid?

You can speak with your school’s guidance counselor for information about applying for colleges. You can also visit the StudentAid.gov website to find general information about planning and paying for college. Remember, the basic application used to apply for financial aid at any school in the nation is called FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This application is used to apply for federal, state, and institutional resources of financial aid. You can apply online or you may obtain a paper application directly from your school counselor or by calling the US Department of Education at 800-433-3243.
