Research at the Hispanic Health Council

Community-based research at the Hispanic Health Council (HHC) identifies needs related to health inequities experienced by diverse communities and develops and evaluates programmatic and policy-related solutions to them. HHC practices community-based participatory research, and thereby involves community members as partners in each step of the research process, including planning, implementation, dissemination of results and development of service programs and policy advocacy initiatives resulting from it.

Stress Management among Latinos with Type 2 Diabetes

The purpose of the study is to test the impact of stress management training delivered by a community health educator on glycemic control among Latinos with type 2 diabetes. Latinos have elevated rates of type 2 diabetes and increased risk for some of its disabling and life-threatening long-term complications. Mental stress worsens glycemic control both directly through the release of stress hormones, and indirectly by disrupting diabetes self-care behaviors. This NIH-funded R01study is a partnership between Yale University the University of Connecticut Health Center, Hispanic Health Council and Hartford Hospital.

Promoting Fruit and Vegetable Intake among Pregnant Latinas

The specific aim of this feasibility study is to gather data to inform the design of a community-based intervention promoting appropriate gestational weight gain (GWG) through increased fruit and vegetable (F&V) consumption among overweight/obese, pregnant, low-income Latinas.  Results will inform health care and WIC providers about cultural F&V practices, preferences, and perspectives to help improve nutrition counseling among this population.  This NIH-funded R24 study is a partnership between Yale University, the Hispanic Health Council and Hartford Hospital.

Rewards-to-Quit Focus Groups

This study is part of a CMS-funded smoking cessation incentive grant led by the Connecticut Department of Social Services. The focus group project is designed to inform the development of the incentive initiative by gathering data from the groups of Medicaid recipients targeted by the project.
